No T.V.? Read a Book

Since turning the satelite off over a month ago evenings at our house have been a bit quieter. Instead of fighting over the remote and arguing over what television show to watch we now have read aloud time. This week as part of our schooling we have started reading about Cameron Townsend. Until recieving the book with "My Father's World-Exploring Countries and Cultures" last month i had never heard of Cameron Townsend and had no idea who he was. So it has been a real treat to learn about the man who started Wycliffe Bible Translators. We are only three chapters into the book-reading the fourth tonight-but the children and i look forward to this time now. The question is no longer, "Can we watch Disney Channel?" but, "When are you going to read to us?". They are learning far more from this man who died in 1982 than they ever learned watching "Hannah Montana". Last night we read how Cameron Townsend started his mission work in Guatemala. When i finished the chapter, Rachel wanted to find Guatemala on the world map so we enjoyed gathering around and testing our map finding skills which we have been honing in our Geography lessons. In the 4+ years i have been homeschooling i do not remember a time when the children have been more enthusiastic about their studies. I don't remember a time that i have been more excited myself. By the way, it has dawned on me that i have not shared the title of the book we are reading. My apologies. The title is, "Cameron Townsend: Good News in Every Language" by Janet & Jeff Benge. It is just one in a series of "Christian Heroes: Then & Now". In the coming months we will be reading about others in this series. With names like Amy Carmichael, George Muller, Nate Saint, Gladys Aylward and David Livingstone i am sure they will all be good. Television? Don't miss it. Besides, we do still have the Wii. We haven't gone cold turkey just yet.

Hey,

That sounds good. I might want to borrow it, especially if it gets the kiddos interested in geography!

Hey Anonymous, do i know you? Well, it has definitely piqued my kids interest in geography. Even Jeremy and i like to find different places on the map and that is really good for someone like me who is geographically impaired! charis

I've been feeling led to get off the tv. We keep the tv on around here soooo much. My first step was to tell dh last night that there was going to be no more Spongebob. He actually agreed to that!! Yay!

Oh yeah, Spongebob, that lovable little square guy who lives in a pineapple under the sea. I remember the days of watching him. You could probably say we had an addiction of sorts but you can break free, i am here to tell ya. With the kids it was Disney Channel and i have been amazed at how little they have missed it. After that first day there was never any mention of it. God is good! Now we even have an arts and crafts corner and i told the kids we need to instate family arts and craft time in the evenings and they love the idea. I really need it because i do not have that time any other time of day. I feel another blog post coming on...Well, hope you have a blessed weekend and maybe i will see you on facebook! charis

You're going to love George Mueller. Reading his bio encouraged me to learn to totally depend on God and to do His work, trusting Him for the provision!

Can't wait! From what i have heard of George Muller he was indeed a man of great faith. I am sure to learn a lot from him and the others. charis

Charis, how did you get your dh to go along. I really want to do that and for the most part me and the girls have story time in the evening and they don't watch any TV during the day but when dh gets home, that is another story. Which I knew how to get him on board.

Glori, it was actually my husband's idea. We were tired of seeing the kids piled up in front of the television and fussing over who watched what. They even play outside more now too. Our next step is to cut back on the Wii. That will probably be another post. charis

Good for you guys! We have seriously cut back on TV, too. We only have an antenna anyway, but the kids could still sit in front of PBS all day long if I let them- especially the 2 yr old! We started by limiting ourselves to just a few shows (mine are Desperate Housewives and LOST, my hubby likes Smallville.) I try to only let the kids either watch 1 movie or PBS for an hour a day, but some days I really need to get something done and they watch more, and some days they don't even ask for it!
