Hummingbird Update
Three weeks ago i was blaming the rain for the absence of hummingbirds. Now it seems the "culprit" may not be excess of percipitation but the abundance of blooms in the area.
After voicing my concerns about missing hummingbirds to my husband, he talked with Mrs. Mary, who runs the little store down the street. Every year Mrs. Mary has several little feeders around the store. If anyone knows where the hummingbirds are it would be her.
Mrs. Mary told Jeremy that with all the flowers blooming at this time the tiny birds are feeding off of them instead of feeders. It is when the heat dries out these flowers and the nectar is gone that they will return to the feeders. Hmm...maybe the rain isn't completely free of blame after all.
Earlier this week i did spot two hummingbirds darting about the tree beside the house, so i know they are out there. This has been an encouragement as i await their return. As i wait i will continue to keep the feeders filled and make sure my camera is close at all times.

Where are the Hummingbirds?
I think i will blame it on the rain.
For so many days now the wet stuff has been falling and soaking everything. The creek is up. The grass is up too. There are puddles everywhere and our gravel driveway has washed away in places. I don't think the rain has left anything untouched!
And that is why i am blaming the rain for the disappearance of the hummingbirds. Before the rain they were starting to come around. A person didn't have to stand around too long before hearing the humming sound and seeing the little bird dart to and fro. Due to their speed and shyness around people, i had yet to get a picture. It took me awhile last year before i was able to get some good shots so i was not about to give up.
But then the rain came...
Day after day i look; hoping for some sign...but i see nothing. The feeders hang in their place, swaying in the wind and dripping from all the rain. But no hummingbirds.
Alas! What to do?
Yes, i will wait. Surely the rain will stop falling one day! And when it does, i will be ready with my camera in my hand...
Until then i will remember their flight
and the sweet delight
of watching the hummingbird,
flying to and fro
and humming as it goes.
I still have my pictures that i took last year. The one posted above is one of my favorites. When i want to see a hummingbird i take the pictures out and hope to get more this year.
Hurry back, hummingbird! I am watching and waiting for you!
